The Katoma Gold Mine is CXC Upstream's principal asset. It operates four primary mining licences across a gold-bearing mountain owned by the company, in the Geita district of northern Tanzania.
A gold-producing mine on Tanzania's most productive belt
Katoma Gold Mine (KGM) sits on the Sukumaland Greenstone Belt, the same belt that hosts Geita Gold Mine, Tanzania's largest gold mine. The belt forms the core of the Lake Victoria Goldfield, the geological structure that holds the majority of Tanzania's 44 million ounces of proven gold reserves. Greenstone belts of this type are among the most productive gold-hosting formations on earth.
Working four sites across a single mountain gives us a mine life in excess of 50 years, and lets us plan production over decades rather than seasons.
Mapped ahead of every pit
At Katoma Gold Mine, mining is guided by science, not guesswork. Our induced polarisation surveys, supported by magnetic survey baselines, allow our team to map and sample the ground ahead of every pit design.
Pits are targeted to the highest-grade ore zones, ensuring a selective, focused approach that suits our ore body and delivers superior grade recovery.
The next two years
Four new ore deposits, representing an exploration target in excess of 400,000 ounces, have been identified across part of the Katoma Gold Mine through our most recent IP survey, and will be targeted over the next two years.
New road access has been granted by the Geita Municipal Council and constructed to accommodate incline control for heavy vehicles accessing the new pit locations, and pit design plans have recently been granted approval by the district’s Resident Mining Officer.
Built to last fifty years
Governance, safety and environmental oversight at Katoma are aligned to the principles of the International Council on Mining and Metals. The ICMM framework sets the benchmark for responsible mining worldwide, covering safe and healthy workplaces, environmental stewardship, respect for human rights and the fair distribution of benefits to host communities.
CXC Upstream is a major employer in the Geita district. The Katoma Gold Mine is run by a Tanzanian workforce, recruited and trained locally, and we run community and ESG programmes across the district alongside it.
Responsible Mining
All of Katoma's gold comes from primary hard-rock production, with responsible extraction via systematic drilling and blasting.
Exploration
Continuous drilling across the four sites defines the ore body, informs the mine plan and extends the life of the asset.
Grade Control
Systematic sampling across the four sites keeps ore and waste separated, protecting recovery downstream.
